Rainbow Falls - Barron Gorge

March 2023

February 2023.

February 2023 and the water flow at these falls was the prettiest I have seen it so far. This place is stunning and a favourite of mine to visit for a number of reasons.

The last of the daylight hitting the falls May 2022.

In the Gorge it gets dark at the base well before sunset. However high up on the hillside where this waterfall is located I can still get light until just before sunset. That means it is a place I can visit late in the day after work.

It also means that I will be making my way down in the dark but I have done the climb up dozens of times and know the way to and from it very well.

March 2023.

After heavy rain like we have had in early 2023 the waterfall flows a lot stronger. I actually prefer it to flow a little slower. This photo from March was taken a few days after a deluge during which the water flowed about 2 feet higher down these falls. You can see the freshly exposed roots from the topsoil being washed away.

September 2022.

This is the best swimming spot on the hillside in Barron Gorge I have found to date. During the Summer months the waterfall is flowing slowly but the water at the base is the perfect temperature for a North Queenslander to swim in.

December 2022.

Cloud cover permitting nearly every day late afternoon something special happens here. I am often in the water at the falls base with my camera waiting for a daily display of colour.

September 2022.

When the spray from the water fall meets the rays of light from the setting sun cutting through the rainforest canopy, rainbows appear across the pool at the waterfalls base.

I never get tired of this spectacle. It is just a wonderful experience swimming under a rainbow high up a rainforest hillside with not a soul around.

June 2022.

The old tree at the base of the pool has water flowing by it all year round. Like many of the trees in Barron Gorge it has grown over, around and under rocks.

May 2022.

That cavity at the base of the tree is big enough for me to sleep in. It also contains a huge boulder over which the tree has grown.

Visiting with my son, June 2022.

On a visit to the falls in June 2022 there was cloud cover at the top of the falls. My son who lives in Brisbane intended to have a swim but it was too cold even for a southerner in June. I will have to take him back during summer.

Rainbow Falls is yet another slice of heaven in Barron Gorge.
