The Octopus Tree
May 2022 - updated March 2023
This magnificent tree is located high up the side of Barron Gorge. As soon as we got some rain in 2023 it was one of the first places I made my way to. My wife and I refer to it as the Octopus Tree. If you know the correct name for this tree please let me know.
Every year after the rain the seasonal waterfalls flow down the side of Barron Gorge and I explore. I first discovered this tree near the end of the 2022 season.
Since I first set sight on this tree I have been fascinated by the root structure and how it has grown over and around rocks.
I would just love to know how long that rock has been embedded in that root. I have no doubt that at some stage a surge of water down the hillside placed it there pushing it firmly enough into the tree to hold it in place to be grown around. Other sections of the root structure serve as pots for small plants.
In 2023 I have been able to view the water flowing heavier at the base of the tree. I am left wondering if the water is shaping the tree or is the tree guiding the water?
Back in September 2022 there was very little flow of water but the tree was looking splendid surrounded by fallen leaves. Under those leaves there was still a slow flow of water that you can see in the second photo.
As pretty as those leaves are I love being at the tree when the water cascades down the hillside.
By March 2023 the water was pouring down the hillside from a month of good rain. Beautiful spot to visit and even when the water dies back down like the photo below from May 2022 I will still be visiting from time to time.
