Here we go again :)
14th March 2023
The waterfall season has well and truly started. It was not so long ago that I was swimming under a trickle of water at the base of this waterfall every Saturday after work.
You can tell from the freshly exposed roots that water raged down here much higher than it was on the wet day I was there.
Usually when I make my way up the hillside on these rocks there is no flowing water. That water flow is making some big changes to the hillside in Barron Gorge.
With well over a month of good rain hitting the hillside the slopes are very soft. This results in healthy trees falling over and creating new deadfall. At present I am very careful about how much faith I put into hanging onto a tree as I make my way up the hillside.
I have climbed over this rock dozens of times as I have made my way up the hillside. Very scary when a boulder this size moves. Rocks that I thought were almost immovable Mother Nature is moving on the hillside.
Deadfall that was much higher up the hillside I now see lower down. The next huge deluge of rain I am going to try to get onto the hillside to record the flow at its high. From marks on the rock walls, removed soil and where that deadfall is stuck, I think that water flows about 4 to 5 feet higher down the hillside.
Outside the wet season no water flows down this little path. If you look at the large boulder at the top you can see how much of the soil has been washed away from under it during the recent rain. I am guessing even it will topple over eventually.
For the next few months I will continue to make my way around the hillside visiting waterfalls and swimming spots I know. I hope to get some good photos and to also record the changes that have occurred there.
On many of my visits to the Gorge I will be coming down of the hillside in the dark or during the last glimpses of light. It is a beautiful place to be at that time of the day.
