Silver Valley - Atherton Tablelands

March 2023

March 2023.

I first started exploring this location as much as my car will allow about 3 years ago. I would say the best time to visit the area is the wet, but the dirt roads into the location are at their worst then.

Some of the rock formations along the creeks are breathtaking. I have never seen the water clear in the creeks there but that may happen one day.

On most of my visits here the car gets parked on the side of the dirt road and I walk off into the bush. In my opinion you will never get the most out of this location if you expect to drive right up to places of interest.

On nearly every visit to this location I have some bad experience with insects. On the very first visit I was stung by wasps. On another visit I was harassed by biting flies and on the most recent visit the midges required constant waving away from my face. I find the spiders the least of my worries!

I keep on returning to this location because I find the bush so Australian and despite it not being the most photogenic, I love being there especially when the gum trees are wet like in the above photo.

If you are there when gums and wattles are flowering there will be more insects but it is very pretty ……once again in a uniquely Australian way.

Of course for me however the star attraction in Silver Valley is the creeks and the wonderful rocks that line them. The changes in waterflow during the year are extreme at Silver Valley.

To highlight that point the photo with the dry creek bed was taken in June 2021. The one with the water pouring down the creek was just 3 months earlier in March 2021. These two spots are less than 500 metres from each other on the same creek.

Fast forward to my most recent visit in March 2023 and the water flow was somewhere in the middle. A very pleasant walk along the creek…….if I could have ignored the midges.
