Clear water
7th August 2022
With the rains well and truly behind us now the water in Barron Gorge is clear. Well, clear by Barron Gorge standards :)
During the rain the water is full of topsoil washed down from the Tablelands. The water level also rises greatly during the big downfalls.
A big water release whilst the water contains a lot of topsoil results in the higher rocks being covered in silt. Once the water level drops back down and they dry it looks like this. It takes a while for the rocks to go back to looking their normal self.
At present much of the higher rocks are clean and the flowing water clear as well. That means a much more pleasant ride down the river for the kayakers.
Speaking of kayakers, I would like to get some photos of the kayakers from different spots on the river in better light in the next year. They usually come down late in the day once the water is released by the hydro plant. I need an early water release day to avoid having to shoot pretty much at dusk all the time.
Another thing that I would like to do a lot more of is share some of the places I go to in Barron Gorge with my wife. Unfortunately, like my sons, I think she is reluctant to rough it as much as I am. Hopefully photos of sunsets like below will persuade her.
