Ravenshoe in the Misty Mountains

An old house on the road into Ravenshoe on a rainy day.

Ravenshoe is the highest Town in Australia. If you visit there early morning or late evening often enough you soon understand why the Jirrbal people refer to this area as Gambil Yalgay - Misty Mountains. When it is cloudy there you do feel like you are living in the clouds.

The Windfarm outside the township just as the morning fog clears

The morning I took this photo the fog was just about to lift and the sun take over. Once the fog is gone, Ravenshoe can be just as hot and humid as the rest of far North Queensland. Carry lots of water if you are bushwalking.

Fallen trees wet from rain In the bush just outside of Ravenshoe.

By far my favourite time to be in Ravenshoe is just after rain has fallen in the bush. The colours of the trees and the rocks come to life.

If you like waterfalls then the nearby Millstream falls will delight you. I have more photos of the falls here.

I am still exploring Little Millstream Falls (another falls just outside Ravenshoe) but will get photos up soon.

Coolabbi Creek, February 2020

As well as known attractions you will also find very beautiful little spots throughout the area. This little creek and Coolabbi Creek I stumbled across as I was searching for McKenzie Falls.

Lantana ….pretty flower but an introduced pest.

You will sadly also see a lot of these flowers in the area. They belong to the introduced pest Lantana. It is a restricted invasive plant under the Biosecurity Act 2014 and smothers native plants as it grows in thick patches.

The plant is also poisonous to some animals including cattle. Thickets of the plant become so thick that animals cannot pass through areas affected.
