Paradise under the Pyramid

August 2022

View of Walsh`s Pyramid from the property.

Late last year some customers of mine informed me that they were purchasing some land on Behana Creek. After they described the spot to me I told them I knew of it but had never gone in as it is marked as private property.

Trees by the creek.

After they purchased the property they gave me permission to explore it …….and that I have been doing. The first thing that struck my eye was this group of trees on a beautiful rocky section.

The widest section of Behana Creek I know.

I know Behana Gorge and the creek very well from my time in the National Park section. I have been exploring it for many years now. This section of the creek on their property would have to be the widest and most beautifully rocked section I have seen. But there is more to come.

Best swimming hole in the area is behind that rock.

I am guessing that most locals think of swimming holes when they think of Behana Creek and rightly so. Some of the best swimming holes in the area are along that creek. The other side of that rock is the best I have seen.

The dead fall in the bend of the creek at the swimming hole.

Beyond those rocks is this bend in the river. During the wet season the rising waters push dead fall onto the rocks to the right. That strong wet season flow has also created a deep swimming hole over time.

Clear and deep water. Stunning spot

From the other side this is what that swimming hole looks like. I am yet to take a photo that does it justice but this is the best swimming hole I have seen in the area. Deep clear water with beautiful rocks and trees to surround.

Vegetation lining the banks of the clear and still water.

The bend in the river is so sheltered that the water top creates stunning reflections of the vegetation lining it.

Mirror like shallow water in many sections.

Both up and down stream of that swimming hole during June and July, the water has been shallow enough for me to comfortably walk in it. This place is heaven despite one creature that is trying to destroy/spoil it.

Some of the bush away from the creek.

In many spots along this property people have entered and either visited or set up camp. The sad thing is that they have left rubbish in total disregard for this land.

Rubbish collect on one visit.

I have taken bags and bags of small rubbish out with me on my visits. Sadly it will take a bigger effort to remove the bigger objects with which humans have desecrated the area.

Cars and tyres are dumped on the property.

Anything from tyres and other car parts to complete cars have been dumped along this stretch of paradise. Squatters have left broken temporary shelters, bedding, clothing and all sorts of rubbish. Why would you do such a thing? I am sad when I see access to spots like this denied but in the case of this area I see why installing gates and security cameras was necessary. Some humans seem intent on destroying it.

Norhtern Fantail, one of the many birds present.

After the rubbish the location is also home to a large variety of wildlife and as I photograph more of them I will add photos.

Like the rest of the Behana region spiders are everywhere and walking into a spiders web is a common occurrence.

Spiders are also on the ground and I spotted this one as I was picking up some rubbish on the way out one night. Not sure if this is venomous but I took no chances.

My son was back from University this week and he came out with me on a trip to this property to help collect rubbish and to have a look. He told me he had been there before with his friends. I hope they treated it with respect and were not part of the reason why this spot now needs to be protected with gates and security cameras.
