The end of the seasonal waterfalls
mid June 2022
The last three months have been all about the seasonal waterfalls of Barron Gorge. With no real rain for weeks now I think I can say the season is over and what a season it was.
I got the above photo in the first week of June, it was one of my last keepers and is also one of my favourites from the season. It is taken right at the top of the side of the Gorge. Earlier in the season the water was flowing way too strong to get this photo and the leaves were also absent. It pays to keep on going back.
Another of my favourite photos was of this waterfall in mid May. The next photo from late May shows you how much things changed in the following weeks.
By the end of May the water flow over the falls has reduced greatly. The pool at the base has also lowered and the vegetation in general has started to dry out.
Some corners of the Gorge get little light so they take longer to dry out. In those spots there is a lot of green. That said the hillside is drying out.
This section of dead fall had water pouring over it in mid May as much of the hillside did.
Now in mid June that same spot has barely a trickle of water over that log.
The areas void of vegetation on the rocks either side of this waterfall tell the story of how wide it once flowed not so long ago. I actually prefer some of these waterfalls when they flow slower like this.
There are still a few very small waterfalls that are flowing quite well but overall it is finished for the year. To be honest as much as I have enjoyed this waterfall season in Barron Gorge, I am ready to spend more time elsewhere.
As it turns out I am going to be heading up the Tablelands for work a lot in the next month so will be exploring up there again. I love the Tablelands and am very fortunate to have a large customer base there..
Closer to home some of my customers have given me permission to explore their property just outside of Cairns. The photo above was from last weekend on my first visit. It is truly a slice of heaven and I am ever so grateful :)
