Nandroya Falls - the journey is better than the destination
Original post 29th April 2020 - updated February 2022
When I think of Nandroya Falls I think of the journey in and out and the many little waterfalls that I will see on the way.
I think of the stunning trees that also line both the long and short tracks to the falls.
I think of how both the waterfalls and the trees are transformed by the light at certain times of the day. I hardly ever think of Nandroya Falls however, the destination fails to inspire me for photos like the journey does.
About 400 metres along the track to the falls you have a choice to go directly to the falls or turn right and take the path along Henrietta Creek to the falls. On the way in I usually take the shorter direct route and come back the long way.
The track in is well maintained but when wet it is really slippery.
You will however at times encounter fallen trees that have not been cleared from the track yet.
You will also have to climb over and under fallen trees that have become part of the track. By the way my wife had her socks over her pants this day because this track is full of leeches.
On the short track to the falls there is one waterfall that is marked as Silver Falls and both my wife and myself love this waterfall.
The water drops into a shallow pool looking very much like a shower. A very beautiful place to wash down if you are hot and sweaty.
As you approach Nandroya Falls the sound of the water hitting the base of the falls will become very clear. You will also walk past the wide waterfall that flows from the main pool below Nandroya into the creek.
Continue along the track and you reach the final stretch to the base of Nandroya. It is a stone path that can be very slippery. The shade from the rain forrest starts to disappear as the falls become visible.
Through the canopy the first part of Nandroya that reveals itself is the top of the waterfall which on this day the sun was hitting.
I know some people love this waterfall but whilst I enjoy looking at it and being at the base for a while it is far from a favourite.
I never stay at Nandroya very long and soon start the return journey along the longer track to the falls that skirts along Henrietta Creek for most of the way.
Along the path you will see this stunning little waterfall which has become a favourite spot of mine to stop. Yes I even like this waterfall better than Nandroya.
If you are prepared to break from the track and face the leeches and savage bush in the short journey to the creek edge, then there are also some very pretty spots waiting for you.
Back on the track, if there has been rain then you will see many little waterfalls flowing down onto the track.
The trees that line the path as I mentioned at the start are also a great feature of the walk.
