Going home 2021

March 2021

Adelaide Convention Centre on the Torrens River.

Due to Covid I missed being in Adelaide for my Father’s 80th birthday last year. This year with some work to do in the city Yumi and I made it to Adelaide for his 81st.

For this stay in Adelaide we decided to use public transport as much as possible to avoid the hassle of city parking. Armed with our Metro passes we got around the city very easily and quickly with it being a short trip from Dad’s house in Mitcham to the City.

We avoided the peak morning and afternoon travel times and usually found ourselves one of few on the trains, trams and busses we used.

Once in the City the street art is pretty much everywhere. Adelaide has a real highbrow feel to it if you know what I mean.

The places we enjoyed being the most in the City were the Botanical Gardens and down by the Torrens River. There even seemed to be a few tourists paddling under the bridge.

A more popular way to explore the river is on one of the river tour boats. These always seemed to have quite a few passengers on board.

The location that the tour boats depart from is also where the rowing clubs that use the river store their boats and have their clubhouses. Early morning and late afternoons you see many club and school teams training on the river.

Even in the river the city artwork is present. There are quite of few of these in the river that look like large paper boats. Amazing how a tree is growing out of this one.

There is a little truck that looks like a road sweeper that drives up and down the walking paths along the river. It is cleaning up the large amounts of pooh left by the abundant bird life on the river.

As you walk along the river you can make your way to the Botanical Gardens and the adjoining park. The city continues its love of artwork in the gardens as well. We spent a fair bit of time there and I will do another post on the Gardens later.

Late afternoons we would usually walk around the city for a while and admire the architecture we do not have in Cairns. Adelaide seems to be able to pull of this nice blend of old architecture with a lot of new.

I am not really a fan of tall buildings but it is interesting to be in a big city every now and then.

The main city railway station is metres from the river where I took the photo above. We always made sure if we were in the city that we spent the end of the day down by the river.

We never got an epic sunset but our time at that spot late in the day was always very enjoyable.

With the last of the sunset fading we would make our way home to be welcomed on our arrival by my Father’s dog Misa. Yumi and I both got really fond of Misa on this visit.

Misa is so cute.
