Warming up

early October 2021

Barron Gorge, 1st of October 6:58pm

It is warming up here in Far North Queensland and our reptilian residents are becoming more visible even at night.  Friday evening coming out of Barron Gorge I ran into this fella near the car.

Just before that I nearly trod on another snake as I made my way through the bush. Both are pythons from my little knowledge of snakes but let me know if I am wrong.

I wear a head torch to see my way out hand free and it also illuminates objects I want to take night photos of.  This was at 6:42pm.

For those that are into photography, to get a clear shot handheld even with the headlight, I was at ISO 12.8k for one and 6.4k for the other.  Amazing that you can get a usable photo at those high ISO numbers.

Saturday and I am back in Barron Gorge again looking for some gear I forgot the night before and I run into this snake that does not look very friendly at all.

With the long lens on my camera I appear to be very close but I can assure you that I kept my distance and let the snake move on its merry way when ready.

Hastie’s Swamp, 3rd of October about 4pm

Sunday I headed to Hastie’s Swamp to sit with the birds for a while. In the trees to the side of the bird hide was what I think is a Spotted Tree Monitor.  Let me know if I am wrong or right.

He was a fair way off in the distance and I only noticed him when his head popped directly out into a small patch of sunlight.

He made his way down to the ground for a short while and then headed back up the tree.  I think he had eyes for some eggs in a nearby Willy Wagtail nest.
