Butterflies at Tinaroo

A sunset at Tinaroo February 2019.

I do not visit Lake Tinaroo as much as I used to. My strongest memories of Tinaroo are of the sunsets I have shared there with my wife.

Lake Tinaroo, 26th January 2021 , about 6am.

Last weekend I visited Tinaroo with my wife again and whilst we were there we noticed the recent rain and the vegetation that it created were being enjoyed by butterflies.

Blue Wanderer butterfly, January 2021.

I do not know what that plant is that is growing in the lake but it also grows on the lakeside as well. You can see to the left of the lowest Blue Wanderer a caterpillar enjoying the leaves.

In smaller numbers there were also the brown Lesser Wanderer butterfly. Both of the butterflies were enjoying whatever it was that the plant had to offer.

Blue Wanderer flying between the flowers.

Lesser Wanderer stopped on a leaf.

Photographing the butterflies stationary was not that difficult but trying to get them mid flight was another thing. I spent a few hours trying to catch them in mid air.

To me that butterfly is tiny but to the little ant under the butterflies legs the Blue Wanderer is huge.

Above are some of my efforts in trying to catch the butterflies in mid flight. Very hard and hope to try again soon.

Common Crow Butterfly.

Of all the in flight photos I took that morning this one of a Common Crow Butterly flying in to join another was my favourite.

The 26th being a holiday people started arriving at Tinaroo in large numbers after 8am. Liking my peace and quiet I sat and enjoyed the dead trees on the mirror top water for a while and then headed home driving past a steady stream of cars towing boats and jet skis heading to the Lake for the day.
