Hahndorf - South Australia

November 2019

November saw my wife and myself sneak a long weekend to go and visit my father who is recovering from some eye surgery. It has been quite a few years since I have seen him.

We did not manage to get him out and about too much but we did get him to drive up into the Adelaide hills to the German settlement town of Hahndorf. The day we visited it was quite overcast.

The main street is filled with old sandstone buildings and historical displays. If you are into shopping then you will be pleased to know that almost every building has been turned into a shop. This is very much a tourist town now.

Horserides on Sundays.

We visited on a weekday as Hahndorf gets very crowded on weekends. One upside of going on the weekends is that you can pay to have the kids ride a horse!

There is a car museum and a chocolate factory a little distance away from the main street that are well worth a visit. We did not visit them this time as we had some thing else in mind.

What we had in mind was not a cup of tea but to try some German beer and food. Hahndorf is a great place to do that, so we did in a slightly too big way.

Lunch and more.

When we were in Adelaide my youngest brother (middle above) was back from the US where he has lived for many years now.

Probably only ever do this once so we did it properly. We ordered two tasting plates and what we could not eat, which was a lot, we took home and had for tea the next day.

My Father with a beer tasting plank.

When it came to trying German beers my Father ordered a plank of 6 small glasses to try as many different beers.

It was a fun lunch. The food and beer were quite expensive but interesting flavours and well worth doing once. The food is a little too rich for my stomach but they do give you containers to take home what you cannot eat, which I think happens with a lot of customers.
