Spangled Drongo

Tarzali Lakes, January 2021.

The long flared and forked tail is how to identify these birds. The eyes are quite red. Both sexes look similar with a black body that has a blue green metallic sheen with highly reflective iridescent spots.

Bushland Beach, Townsville, August 2021.

They perch and wait for large insects to swoop in on. They also tear away bark from trees to eat spiders and other insects. They also eat fruit and nectar.

They are quite common and I must admit that I never give them much attention.
