Little Black Cormorant
My favourite place to view these birds is Centenary Lakes right in the middle of Cairns. They make no noise other than croaking and ticking when fishing together.
Both male and females have emerald green eyes. The white flecks on the head and neck that you see mean that this bird is breeding. This photo was taken in June but according to my book the breeding season is September to May.
Swimming and diving is how these birds hunt for fish, crustaceans, and aquatic insects.
They work together to corral schools of fish and feed. They can swim a long distance under water so you never know where they will come up.
At the Lakes you often see them in pairs. The water lilies when present make a beautiful backdrop to watch any birds there.
When the birds fly in large groups they do so in a v-shaped formation. This bird was coming in solo to the Lakes in the rain.
