Rainbow Lorikeet
These are one of the most stunning birds to photograph colour wise. Their competitiveness for food can provide for some interesting photos.
You usually find these birds in at least pairs but more often in larger groups. Follow the noise as they make a lot of it.
They feed primarily on the nectar and pollen of eucalypt blossoms but also feed on fruit, seeds and insects.
Despite being extremely colourful their all green back camouflages them from attack from above when feeding.
Adult birds have red eyes with a black pupil. Immature birds have brownish black eyes.
I enjoy trying to photograph these birds in flight very much. Challenging but very enjoyable.
They can be found readily on the east coast but also in some southern parts of the country. They have been introduced into Perth in the west..
