Preparing to travel to South Australia.

Early March 2025

On the hillside in Barron Gorge, mid February 2025.

In a bit over a month I will be riding my motorbike to South Australia to visit my Father. As my brother said to me on the phone the other day “you had better get that bike finished!”.

Not only do I have to finish the bike but I also have to refine my gear set up for photos and camping. I need to keep my weight to a minimum as I live off the bike during my travels.

I have been doing the odd trip into the rainforest for the past month or so to get back up to speed with my camera skills and to refine the amount of gear I carry. I have not been worried about getting photos at all, just refining the process.

In Behana Gorge trying to get my gear to a minimum early March 2025.

In the past when I have been out and about taking photos with my car I have at times had a camera bag that weighs about 20 kilograms with my tripods attached. I would load the bag with 2 camera bodies, 4 lenses and 2 tripods as well as other photography related gear. Travelling on the bike with 20 kilograms of photo gear is not possible to do and be comfortable. The weight has to come down.

You may ask why 2 tripods? At times you set up for a photo and need to wait for light. In the mean time you cannot use that tripod so another is handy to explore other compositions. The luxury of multiple tripods and camera bodies will not be possible when I travel on the bike.

The latest work on the bike has been fitting a tail tidy to the back which removes a bit of weight and quite ugly plastic. A big thank you to my older brother the mechanic for helping me with the poor instructions that came with the tail tidy regarding re-wiring the tail lights. He also taught me what an ambient temperature sensor is and does as that had to be relocated during the process :)

Foldable and removable mirrors have been fitted for off-road riding and after about a 5-6 week wait my more off road biased tyres finally arrived.

I will be departing Cairns for my journey to Adelaide mid April with no real fixed plan. I intend to take as long as I want and do a fair bit of stopping, sitting and enjoying what I discover on the way. It has been a while since I had a break and I am so looking forward to this trip. I cannot wait :)

The trip has the Flinders Ranges listed as a priority place to visit and if I get time I also hope to do the Yorke Peninsula again. We will see what happens :)
