Fallen leaves
Late September 2023
Last Sunday I spent a very windy morning down at Babinda exploring some new areas. I hope to get some nice photos out of there soon.
I was done by midday but on my return to Cairns I was still itching to spend some more time in the bush…so yes I headed into good old faithful Barron Gorge. The fist place I went to was Rainbow Falls where I watched the leaves fall into the pool at the base of the falls and spin around on the surface.
That vegetation dangling down the rock face of Rainbow Falls reminded me of another waterfall nearby so I head over to Curtain Falls.
Along with the strong wind of late we have also been getting a bit of rain. On my way over to Curtain Falls there was very little water on the hillside but still enough to allow some flow down the hillside.
When I am in Barron Gorge I am noticing more and more the trees that have rocks in them. I really would like to know how long it takes to grow around a rock like that?
During the wet the water pours down the hillside over the rocks. As things dry up later in the year the water flows in some parts under rocks and in others totally underground for sections down the hillside.
Before I show you what Curtain Falls looked like last Sunday this is what it looked like back in May 2022. A stunning spot that has now been transformed by the recent strong winds. Take note of the rocks above the falls.
A very large tree to the left of the falls has been blown over by the wind taking many other trees on the way down with it.
I sometimes go above these falls via the rocks. Now the rocks I used to climb over are totally covered in vegetation. I am starting to wonder how often these large trees fall given the time it must take for them grow around those rocks? We really are a spec in time us humans.
With Curtain Falls not such a great place to relax at the moment I crabbed across the hillside to Dragon Falls. There were no Water Dragons there on this day and very little water at the base but it was a great place to sit and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate.
