Dragonflies have how many wings?

Tarzali Lakes, January 2021.

I had some photos of dragonflies sitting on my computer so I thought I would throw a page together for the insect. I think I am going to enjoy the memories of those trips as I look up the locations and days.

Barron Gorge, March 2020.

I took this photo as I waited for sunset in Barron Gorge. As it turned out it was one of the best sunset photos I have taken there.

Wurruma Swamp. August 2021.

On this trip to Wurruma Swamp I came away with few photos but I was very pleased with catching this dragonfly just as it was about to land on that twig.

Eubenangee Swamp, December 2020.

I have visited Eubenangee Swamp once and on that day my wife was with me. It was a bit of a rainy day and we always talked about going back ……which we are yet to do.

Wurruma Swamp, February 2023.

This dragonfly appears to have 7 wings. A little later on another photo from a different angle will explain what is really going on here.

Barron Gorge, January 2022.

A photo taken on one of those days when nothing much is happening…… so I sit in the grass and watch the insects.

Abattoir Swamp, January 2022.

Abattoir Swamp is a place I was visiting a lot for a while in the hope of getting good bird photos. However the swamp is overgrown with an introduced grass that has destroyed the wetlands. There is not as much birdlife there as there once was. Quite sad.

Wurruma Swamp, February 2023.

This photo explains the mystery of the 7 winged dragonfly. That trip to Wurruma Swamp produced no photos other than of insects. I headed out to Forty Mile Scrub on the same day and had no luck with photos there either.

Abattoir Swamp, January 2022.

This photo was taken on my birthday that year. I spent the day in about 3 different swamps :)

Coolabbi Creek, August 2023.

This is the most recent photo of a dragonfly I have taken. It is from a trip to Coolabbi Creek a couple of weeks ago during which I discovered a pond occupied by at least one Platypus.

Abattoir Swamp, January 2022.

Another photo taken at Abattoir Swamp on my birthday in 2022.

Barron Gorge, January 2023.

I took this photo in Barron Gorge waiting for the kayakers to come down the river. They never came down that day as they were all in Behana Gorge paddling the raging water there. Sadly I would soon discover that my friend Petr had a tragic accident paddling Behana.

Barron Gorge, February 2023.

Another photo of a dragonfly taken on a day soon after Petr’s passing. I avoided going into Barron Gorge for months after learning of Petr’s death, pretty much up until the memorial day held in April.

Even now I only visit there every now and then as it is just not the same anymore. I used to go into Barron Gorge 3 to 4 times a week.

Tarzali Lakes, January 2021.

This was a great day at Tarzali Lakes. My wife was with me and we had a wonderful time despite not seeing any Platypus.

28th December 2022.

Late 2022 and I was visiting Wurruma Swamp as often as I could to watch some Black Swan cygnets grow up.

Behana Gorge, 15th October 2022.

I remember this day in Behana Gorge very well. I spent it at this amazing section of the creek where large trees grow over boulders.

Wurruma Swamp, February 2023.

More time in the grass at Wurruma Swamp. Some visits nothing happens but for the majority I see something of interest.

Behana Creek, December 2022.

This was taken on a very wet walk along Behana Creek. I know a few caves in the area which I used to keep dry for large parts of the day.

Wurruma Swamp, February 2023.

I took this photo whilst I waited at the Swamps edge to try and get some photos of Green Pygmy Geese, a bird that had eluded me for years until recently.

Barron Gorge, January 2023.

Usually I throw away photos of the back of subjects but I really liked this image showing the structure of the insect.

Barron Gorge, January 2023.

I got so many photos of dragonflies on this visit to Barron Gorge. There are some more common types I see but this one is quite different.

Barron Gorge, January 2022.

I remember taking this photo very well. At the time I could not figure out if the dragonfly in the front was trying to drown the one attached behind or if the rear one was trying to get a drink?

Wurruma Swamp, December 2022.

Taken in the grass during yet another visit to Wurruma Swamp. I spend a lot of time in the grass there and I get to see many different things, not just dragonflies.
