Little Gorge Falls - Barron Gorge
May 2023
I first discovered this waterfall at the start of the waterfall season in early 2022. My favourite photo so far is the one above at the end of the waterfall season in 2022. For reasons I will explain later I will never get this same composition again.
Above the falls is a small Gorge that runs along the top of the hillside. At the end of it the water takes a sharp left turn and heads down to the waterfall.
Months after the waterfall season has finished water still flows down this waterfall. The pool however becomes very shallow and the fallen leaves in the dry add a nice bit of colour.
Not much light makes it through the rainforest canopy there so timing photos is key. The lack of sunlight also means that a lot of fungi grow on the deadfall.
At the peak of the waterfall season during the wet it is not safe for me to climb up the hillside to this waterfall. As soon after we got a break in the torrential rain in 2023 I did make my way up and you can see how much higher the water flowed by the now exposed roots from the top soil being washed away.
The water flow in 2023 was so great that it washed even that large deadfall down the hillside. In some cases deadfall can be a distraction in a waterfall shot but for this waterfall I think it added to the composition.
Like many of the waterfalls in Barron Gorge this one is home to Eastern Water Dragons. Not many at this one but a few which I think are regulars. They certainly are not bothered by me.
The above photo shows you how much the weather and time of the year can effect the colours at this spot. This day was quite overcast, everything was wet from recent rain and the overall feel was rainforest green.
Notice that there was even more deadfall there compared to earlier in 2022. It is all gone in May 2023 but I am sure we will get some more and who knows, it might even make for a better photo.
