Curtain Falls - Barron Gorge
updated October 2023
As soon as the waterfall season started in 2023 Curtain Falls was one of the first places I visited. The name comes from that vegetation that hangs like a curtain on the rock face.
The walk up to these falls when the water is flowing is stunning as it weaves its way through the rocks and trees down the hillside.
That piece of deadfall in the middle of the falls has been there since I first found the location in 2022. The water flow has in a way polished that timber. Sadly that log is no longer there as it was washed away in the heavy rains early 2023.
The rock face to the side of the curtain is also covered in vegetation and when that dripping water is hit with sunlight it is beautiful.
This is the first photo I took of the waterfall back in 2022. In previous years I never made it up this far not knowing what awaited me just a bit further up the hillside.
The rainforest is constantly reminding me of how ephemeral a state in nature can be ……so take the photo while I can! On a visit to the falls in late September I discovered they had been hit heavily by a large tree fall. The surrounding area is also heavily covered with fallen trees taken down by the one large tree.
We have had some unusual rain in late 2023 accompanied by very strong winds. It might be some time before Mother Nature cleans up these falls for photos for me.
Often the reason why I run out of time as I make my way up the hillside in Barron Gorge is that I get distracted by little scenes like this. I run out of daylight and have to head back down….so even though Curtain Falls are now in a less than visually pleasing state I will continue to visit.
It always about the journey for me and good photos are a bonus if I get them. You never know what will happen or what you will discover when you head out with an open mind.
