Back to the Bulls

Club legend Wally still on the field.

This year is the first year in a long time that I have not videoed the Cairns Rugby Union season for Barron Trinity Bulls. During the season I would be out at the games videoing the matches alongside Chris Lodge who has been photographing the Union for I am guessing decades.

I love my time in the bush so much now and my son is no longer playing Union. I have called it a day on doing the season but might drop in from time to time to see how the Bulls are going. With video for both grades it took well over 10 hours out of my life every week .

On the way to scoring an individual try.

That said I decided to pop out to a reserve grade game on the weekend and take some photos. Wally was still playing as were a few of the others from previous seasons. There were other players however who I have never seen before. The young man above I do not know but he made a great solo run all the way to the try line and scored.

Ball and all tackle :)

I know Bart, the Bulls player (coaching also this year) in the back, but the two others I have no idea who they are. Bulls reserve grade team made a strong comeback in the second half to I believe remain undefeated this year. I did not stay from the Premier grade as my daughter was coming to visit that afternoon.

Following some missing Bulls to Ivanhoes.

Former Bulls Player Kris Verevis-Brim making a tackle.

Quite a few players from Ivanhoes came over and played Union at the Bulls during Covid and have now returned to rugby league. Some Bulls have also switched to League this year. Kris is one such player and it was great to catch up with him.

Kris passing past the opposition.

The League games were faster and I must say they all looked a lot fitter than the average Cairns Rugby Union player.

Kris’s Uncle I believe.

Kris is enjoying his time at Ivanhoes playing alongside his Uncle and some other family. There is another Bulls Player who went to school with my son who has also moved to Ivanhoes this year to play alongside family. He did not play this day so I will pop out again this season to see if I can catch him on the field.

Ivanhoes try in first grade.

Ivanhoes reserve grade went down to Cairns Bothers. I did not stay for the second half of the first grade game but they came back in the second half to get the win over Brothers.

It was great to be out at the football and not have to worry about missing anything, just talking photos for fun.

Interesting tackling style by #20.
