Cape Spencer Lighthouse

March 2021

Day in March 2021 about 7:20pm.

During our stay on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia we visited the Cape Spencer lighthouse. It never ceases to amaze me how different the same place can look in a matter of hours. This was the view of the lighthouse as we made the way back to the car. Very different from when we arrived. If only the lighthouse had been on!

Earlier that day at 5:35pm.

We could have just walked up to the lighthouse, taken a snap and then moved onto the next spot of which there are many. We saw a few people do just that during our about two hour visit here. However we always like to sit and just take in a location.

A young Kangaroo saying hello.

We were not there long before some of the locals came out to say hello as we inspected the coast line.

The reason for the lighthouse.

As you explore the cliff faces it soon becomes obvious why the lighthouse is required and how ships like the Ethel met their end on this coast line.

The sun starting to set at 5:45pm.

The sun starting to set at 5:45pm.

In the 15 minutes (we get distracted easily) it took us to walk to the lighthouse the sun became noticeably lower. The location was already starting to look very different and we were looking forward to sunset.

Sunset starting at 7:06pm.

We had a beautiful hour sitting and relaxing only interrupted by a bit of rubbish collection. Sad how people just leave their rubbish.

7:08pm and a very different look.

In just minutes the sky transformed into this orange light ray show. My wife now knows that even after this you have to watch out for the after burn. As it turned out on this day the after burn was my wife’s favourite part of that sunset.

Twelve minutes later as we made the way back to the car almost in the dark the sky lit up. Amazing, all the same place and all the changes within hours.
