Abattoir Swamp - Mt Molloy

November 2021

Just north of Mt Molloy.

Just north of Mt Molloy is Abattoir Swamp, named so due to the fact that there was once an Abattoir nearby. It is well know for the birdlife there and the purpose built bird hide. The swamp has had issues for the last few years with a grass overgrowing the open water resulting in many of the birds no longer coming there. There is an active community group that manage the Swamp.

That said even in the carpark before you make the walk to the swamp you will be joined by quite a few birds. Some particularly well know occupants of the carpark are the Eastern Yellow Robins.

A new addition to the Swamp is the ability to walk around the edge. As you make your way down the path to the bird hide there is a gate to the left that you are welcome to walk through to visit the little forest at the back of the swamp.

Whilst I love photographing animals I am more a landscape photographer and I hope to get some very nice photos of that little forest area to the back once I get to know it better. I usually visit Abattoir to kill time waiting for a sunset and I was doing just that the day I took one of my favourite photos of 2021 at nearby Mareeba Wetlands.
