Herberton and colour?
November 2020
My memories of Herberton are long walks along old mining tracks with very little colour at all. The umbrella often needed for the sun as for rain on my previous visits.
My wife had been telling me for quite some time of the flowers of Herberton and how beautiful it is. I have been there quite a few times now and had almost given up on it.
On the other hand my wife was still keen to go and even planned to visit with a group of friends given my lack of desire.
The place was not totally absent of flowers and plants of interest on previous visits but it was far from spectacular as the above photos show. I was losing interest.
When I last visited there with my wife in September they had been doing safety burn offs around the town so the only colours were black and a shade of orange.
I usually drive straight past the turnoff to Herberton on my way to Ravenshoe and beyond. So when I noticed the Jacaranda trees in bloom at Ravenshoe I thought perhaps I should take my wife to Herberton just one more time.
My wife was thrilled when we arrived. Unfortunately a lot of the beautiful trees are on private land but this one and some others near a play ground just down from a public toilet (we know all too well) we got to walk around.
We went there to see the Jacaranda trees but the flame trees stole the show. This photo with the Jacaranda in the background is my favourite from the day.
I am pretty sure that this is the train line that runs to the Historical Village. The train was not running on it this day but we have seen one small train going up and down it on other visits. We walked to the side of the track for while in search of colour but found not much more.
Thrilled to have seen some colour we headed to our favourite picnic spot by the river to have some lunch. We were soon joined by a flock of white cockatoos.
With lunch done we drove straight out of Herberton and into the swamp past Ravenshoe. My wife knew I would trick her into ending up out there :)
I think I am done with Herberton……perhaps I am missing something. If so please let me know.
