Devil`s Pool - Babinda Boulders

10th March 2019

The look downstream as the sun started to rise. 30 second exposure of cloud, mist and water movement.

For the last couple of weeks I have been trying to photograph the Boulders at Babinda about half an hour drive south of Cairns. I have tried sunset and sunrises and the rain just will not stop for me. The above photo was taken at first light.

That rain makes the rocks very slippery and my camera gear does not like water. The upside is that the wet rocks look awesome.

The rocks looked totally different during the very short period of as close to sunshine as I got that morning.

Since the late 50`s there have been 17 deaths from swimming or falling there. The last death occurring in 2008. In 2005 there was a movie called “Message Stick” made about the swimming spot and the deaths that have occurred there.

The water sweeps around the corner. I sllpped over here :( All good but still sore and was glad to get the reminder to be careful.

The above photo was taken from about the same spot but looking back up stream. After I took this photo I walked up to the corner and got into the water to view up the large wall of rocks that hover over a popular swimming spot.

The boulders are massive. Still foggy with stop and start rain :(

The most popular place to swim amongst the adventurous appears to be in here. Very beautiful and the boulders enclose the water holes.

The walk from the carpark to Devil`s pool is about 500m and it winds along the edge of the water. The path is very smooth but there are some steps so that will be problematic for a wheelchair. Along the way you will see some really stunning rainforest.

When I arrived at the Boulders a bit before 5am it was still dark and I was the only one there. By the time I was leaving at 9am people were arriving to go swimming. Waiting at my car to have a little chat was this fellow.

I have some more photos from the morning but will add them later.
