Mungana Caves

15th September 2019

My wife at the base of one of the giant openings.

Chillagoe is famous for the caves and the Balancing Rock. The tours of the main caves at Chillagoe are guided. If you prefer to explore on your own then a short drive out of Chillagoe you will find Mungana Caves.

The caves at Mungana are thought to be of a lesser quality than those at Chillagoe because the roof has collapsed in places. We actually enjoyed this feature of the caves.

My wife taking a close look at the old reef forms that are now the rocks of the caves.

The day we were there we had the caves all to ourselves. The only people that we saw were another couple arriving just as we were leaving.

Some holes in the roof of the caves.

As you look up in many places you can look out into the sky. It also makes the caves walkable in most places without using a torch. That said make sure you take one just in case.

Whilst you are looking up you will see some beautiful natural forms and colours. It is hard to do the scale justice in a photo. Everything is so much bigger than it looks in these photos.

A view from the inside of the caves out to the beautiful colours of the rock faces.

This window to the outside of the caves I thought looked like the shape of Queensland.

We are very keen to go back to Mungana and Chillagoe and spend some more time exploring the caves. It is a truly fascinating place not only to view but to learn of its First Nations history and also the mining.
