Making it match
11th June 2024 - Customer location: Cairns
Back in 2022 I made the above engagement ring. As all of my regulars will know I use a process which I call the “Proposal ring”. The proposal ring is created to an estimated finger size in order to keep the proposal a surprise.
If after the proposal we discover that the size is wrong the proposal ring is resized to allow the recipient to wear it whilst I am making the true engagement ring to the correct size.

This avoids the wearer owning a brand new “resized” ring. There are many reasons to avoid resizing a brand new ring.

In the case of this customer she decided to save her free remake of the proposal ring to the correct size and wear the resized ring. I often recommend customers do this until they decide on their wedding ring design in case changes need to be made for the wedding ring and engagement ring to sit next to each other.
Fast forward to 2024 and this customer commissioned me to make the above eternity ring. Yes we have skipped over the wedding ring but I will show you that at the end of this post :)
With gems like this set into the band you need to allow for the depth of the gems. The larger the gem the greater the depth. You also have to be careful that the more metal you cut out of the ring to allow the gem to fit into it, the weaker the metal gets.
With the diamonds going a fair way around the side of the finger that made the side profile of this ring not match the proposal ring.

Please excuse the quality of the photos but I took some snaps on my phone at the workbench as I did this job to save time. You can see here how the diamonds on the side of the ring stick out further than the thickness of the proposal ring.
To correct this we used her free remake of the proposal ring. When I say free, she paid for no labour but a small amount for the increase in the weight of gold used to thicken the ring up which you can clearly see in the above photo.
One final change we made was to increase the height of the main setting by 1.5mm to allow a little more room for the eternity ring to pass through.
Above is the finished engagement ring with the sides of the ring now matching her eternity ring. LOL in the end after a conversation with the customer I think the two side profiles not matching annoyed me more than it did the customer.
For those that are interested above is a photo of her wedding ring. In a closing note I have been posting less to the website and that trend will continue.
Over the many years so much information has accumulated on the website that at this point I am often repeating my self…..and as many of my customers know I already do that too often :) Have a great week.
