One ring or two?

30th May 2023 - Customer location: Cairns

The engagement ring was made in late 2022.

I made the engagement ring above in late 2022. It was one of my favourite rings for the year and a design that I thought might possibly be a standalone engagement ring. By that I mean one where the same ring is used as both the wedding and engagement ring.

The customers were open to this idea but also wanted to explore a wedding ring to sit next to it.

The first stages of the wedding ring design process. Nice shape but too wide.

We looked at two designs but the one she decided to explore further was the above ribbon design. This design has radial symmetry meaning that both sides have the same shape and fit the side of the engagement ring. With radial symmetry it was too wide for my customers tastes.

Narrowing the wedding ring.

To narrow the wedding ring we modified one side and sacrificed the ability for both sides to fit the engagement ring. My customer was now happy with the width :)

The design needed to look good when worn on its own.

It was important to this customer that the wedding ring looked nice when worn on it’s own. She takes good care of her engagement ring and understands that some activities will shorten it’s life and/or could damage it and at that times will only wear the wedding ring.

Artcile: Wearing until failure

She liked the look so far but wanted to explore one final change.

Adding diamonds to the wedding ring.

I altered the design to now have diamonds channel set into it. With the digital mockup approved I prepared a draft in metal to do one final check of the design before making the actual ring.

The two rings sitting side by side.

The finished wedding ring is shown above sitting nicely next the engagement ring.

The wedding ring will at times be worn on its own.

This wedding ring was all about compromise. Getting it to fit the engagement ring and at the same time it being a shape that looks great on its own. Have a great week.
