A new wedding ring with a link to the old.
22nd January 2022 - Customer location: Atherton
I have some very different pieces that I am making at the moment but for one reason or another I am unable to finish them. One ring that I started working on before Christmas that I did get to finish this week was a matching wedding ring for the ring above.
The wedding ring I was making, like her engagement ring, was a remake. She has been married for a long time.
One of the requests she had for the new ring was that it contain some of the gold from the original wedding ring. To achieve that I created some of the pieces for the new ring in wax and prepared them to be cast using her gold. You can read more about the lost wax casting process here.
The pieces to be used in the new wedding ring are tiny but the use of some of the original gold is important to her. The remaining gold we will use in two other rings that I am remaking for her at the moment.
The new ring is made in 18ct yellow gold and the white gold diamond inserts use the 14ct white gold of her original wedding ring.
As we were designing the new ring we explored just putting a pattern on the surface. In the end we decided the pattern needed to be cut all the way through the ring as it is on the shoulders of the engagement ring.
I have left a much wider bar than the top edge on the inside of the ring to add in strength and avoid a sharp edge on the finger. You should be able to just see that wider inside edge through the cut out sections. In the end if we have pushed the fine detail too far…..we will make it again. Time will tell with this one.
When I get a chance I will take a photo of the two rings together. It has not been delivered yet as the customer is in Atherton.
