Marking 60 years of community service
7th May 2021 - Customer Location: Atherton
For a few years now I have been making service rings for the Combined Countries Community sporting group in NSW. One of the events they take part in is the Koori Knockout.
They honour members that contribute 5 years of service to their organisation with a ring. The 1st and 5th years are noted on the shoulders of the ring.
The beauty of the Combined Countries rings is that I get asked to make them every year so I can spread the initial design and set up costs over numerous rings. When I get asked to make a one off I get a bit nervous as I know that the many hours of design, trial and planning all have to be paid for by one ring.
That said when I get a request to make something to honour a man who has for 60 years been heavily involved in charity work in his community it is hard to say no. His latest effort in 2020 was helping to raise funds to donate two portable oxygen concentrators to the Atherton Hospital – Community Health Department.
Rotary, Apex, Lions, Freemasons, Oddfellows, Buffaloes and many other community organisations that were once so popular now struggle to attract new members in our current society. This decline is nothing new and I am guessing many have never heard of organisations like the Buffaloes and Oddfellows.
One of the first jobs my Mother had was working as a secretary at the Oddfellows in Adelaide. They are a fraternity that many in the community here in Australia relied on as a safety net during hard times. Membership was like an insurance when there was no other.

From My World this week the upper heights of Barron Gorge National Park. Of late I have moved away from the water and been climbing up the side of the Gorge following the seasonal waterfalls that are flowing at the moment. It is like another world up there at the top.
Below is one of the most amazing trees I have ever seen and I hopped into the photo to give you some idea of size. I hope to get some better photos that do it justice but for now this is it. Right at the top of the hillside this amazing tree basks in the sun through a gap in the canopy.
