Planning for changes

17th February 2021 - Customer location: Cairns

I made an engagement ring the same style as the one above back in July 2019. The customer loves her ring but fast forward to 2021 and it will not sit next to her desired wedding ring properly.

The issue is that there is not enough room for the wedding ring to sit in under the setting.

When you make wedding rings with gemstones in them they need to be thick enough to allow for the gem depth. The bigger the gem the deeper it is and the thicker the ring needs to be able to accomodate it.

I have made this style wedding ring before but as with nearly every piece I make there were some slight customisations that the customer desired. The main one was that she wanted slightly larger diamonds in the wedding ring.

Not enough room for the wedding ring.

A very slight adjustment of raising the main diamond setting in the engagement ring and all would be good. That would require remaking the ring however. No problem and no cost to the couple to do that.

The Proposal ring - avoiding problems and extra costs

The raised height on the left, original on the right.

The ring that his customer had been wearing for the last two years was a temporary ring I call the Proposal ring. It was used for the proposal with the intention of remaking it to the correct finger size after the proposal and also planning for the wedding ring and making any changes at the same time. Changes like we are looking at today.

Knowing that we are going to remake the Proposal ring we can resize it as many times as we like without having to worry about the fact we are damaging it.

How much does the remaking of the Proposal Ring cost?

For minor changes to the design the remaking of the Proposal Ring is free of charge. If there are ever any extra costs I advise the customer immediately and quote. Most people know that if they start making changes to gem sizes etc that the cost will change.

Haste makes waste

Back in 2019 after the engagement this customer told me she was undecided on her wedding ring (to be expected) and I advised her to continue to wear the proposal ring until she had a design in mind.

She took the advice and now the engagement ring is being remade at no cost to match the wedding she decided on. Most of my customers do this and as I mentioned before I encourage them to do so.

How long will I be without my engagement ring while you remake it?

Usually at the most the customer is without their ring for just a couple of days. The owner can continue to wear the Proposal ring while I remake it with the required changes. Once the new ring is ready we book a day in for the changeover to take place.

For my many out of Cairns customers the process is the same but just a bit slower as we deal with freight and the extra time that takes. This customer is a Cairns local and the diamond was swapped out yesterday and the ring ready for her to have back today.

I love customers that think different.

The final twist to this wedding ring design is that she deiced to make the wedding ring in 18ct rose gold. I am sure this will not be everyones choice but I love the look!

Wooroonooran National Park, February 2021.

Before I go for the week, the place I want to show you from my world is my favourite swimming hole in Wooroonooran National Park. I love swimming under that tree and have been going to this spot a fair bit recently. No tracks in so I am always alone there, truly peaceful.

Have a great week and weekend. I am really busy this Friday so getting in early.
