Make and melt piece #8

8th May 2020

I made this piece back in August 2019. The proposal has just taken place and as planned it has come back to me this month to be melted down. Let me explain why.

Resizing a new ring….yuck!

The are a heap of reason why you should not resize a brand new ring. In the case of this design it will not resize more than the slightest amount without gems falling out or accepting a non round ring.

On the left…..he thought she was this size. On the right the ring made to her actual size.

So how do you make a surprise proposal ring ensuring that you get the finger size right. The answer is that most people cannot.

The Proposal Ring

To get around this problem I use a method which I call “the Proposal ring”. This is a temporary ring that is used for the proposal which I later melt down to be remade the correct finger size or to the design and changes the recipient desires. If the design and materials are the same there is no extra cost for this.

There are many examples of this process in the News section of the site. Just refine the search using the “Engagement” tag from the News menu.

Planning for the wedding ring.

Before I do the ring remake to the correct finger size, we are exploring the wedding ring design to make sure that the desired design will sit next to it nicely when the time comes.

If there are any issues we can make changes to the engagement ring when I remake it to the correct finger size.

So that she can continue to wear the ring whilst we go through this process, I did resize the above ring down 3 sizes but the best I could get it to is an oval shape. This works for the short term given we will melt it down anyway but not a result you would want with your new ring to be worn forever.
