That old world touch

5th October 2020 - customer location: Tasmania

Out starting point for the design.

Whenever I get asked to create a ring based on a design seen elsewhere it always ends up a little different. We inevitably modify it to the customers specific tastes, alter design aspects to suit the intended wear, use a different gem sizeā€¦. etc.

The classic and timeless design above would be our starting point to create a ring for a truly beautiful 8x6mm oval cut Australian Blue sapphire.

Reducing the halo diamond size on the right.

We made a few changes to the design from other angles of view but the most noticeable was to reduce the diamond size around the sapphire. The idea was to highlight the sapphire more and to soften the look of the ring.

Most sapphires sold today have been heat treated in some way to improve the colour. The treatment is so common now it is assumed to have been done. Heat treating is usually permanent but of course not natural. This 2.11 carat Australian sapphire has had no treatment at all, that colour is 100% natural!

With a lot of the antique designs there is as much work done in the not normally visible areas of the ring as the prominent ones. This Edwardian design is no different.

As beautiful as this ring is it is a proposal ring and will be melted down and remade. The true ring will be created in 950 Platinum once we have confirmed the ring finger size exactly and discussed some very minor changes to the design.

One of the many turtle shells around Wurruma Swamp.

As I finish this post there has been a bit of rain tonight here in Cairns. Most of the water bodies in our area are getting lower. When I visited Wurruma Swamp with my wife yesterday the water level was quite low.

As we walked around that dry edge of the swamp there were quite a few turtle shells. Not sure if there has been something feeding on the turtles or if it is related to the lower water.

Most of the Tablelands is looking a little dry at the moment. Got a feeling there is rain on the way. Have a great week!
