Merry Christmas 2019

13th December 2019

The two rings for remodelling after unsetting.

Before I dive into meeting Christmas delivery deadlines I would like to wish all my customers a safe and Merry Christmas. I also hope that 2020 is everything you wish it to be. In the last post for 2019 I would like to share the remodelling of the above ring I just finished for an Atherton customer.

The desired style.

Understanding the customer’s taste in jewellery

When we remake jewellery the most important objective is to create a piece of jewellery that the customer loves. As everyones taste in jewellery is different my first task is to find out what this customer likes.

Sometimes when we modify a design to fit existing gems we end up with a design that we no longer like.

After some consideration and design work both the customer and myself came to conclude that the gems in this customers rings would not suit the desired result in terms of both size and quality.

A rough layout.

All is not lost

Given that the diamonds in the existing rings would not suit our purpose I did a mock up of the design to suit this customer’s budget. We would be recycling the gold using all new diamonds.

The old diamonds would be set aside for use in a piece of jewellery later.

She liked the look of this ring to the right and it fell into her budget despite using all new diamonds. The diamonds to be used would be F colour and Vs2 clarity. We proceeded to working on the design.

Refining the design

Scroll added to the shoulders.

The customer wanted to add a side feature from another ring I had made into her ring. She also felt the that ring was too wide at the sides. We reduced the size of the side diamonds to increase the taper from the centre diamond out.

Sides tapered more with smaller side diamonds.

Getting that finger size right

The silver draft.

To ensure that the customer was happy with what she had seen so far in graphics I created a silver draft of the ring that we could sit the diamonds in and she could try on.

This would allow us to make any small changes to the design if required before making the actual ring. In this case she loved the ring design as is.

Another import advantage of the draft is that I am able to resize the ring to her exact finger size for this design. In this case the ring size indicated by generic sizers was 1.5 sizes too small.

The finished ring.

The ring was created in 18ct yellow gold. The centre diamond is .25 carats in weight and the shoulder diamonds .10 carats each. The quadrant diamonds are .03 carats each.

Merry Christmas!

Thank you to all of my customers for their support in 2019 and I wish you all the best for 2020.
