Scale is everything in design and today we take a design that was created for a large finger size and modify it to a smaller finger and gem size.

This ring once belonged to a late relative. The plan was to reuse the gold and gems and turn it into a piece of jewellery more to my customers tastes that she could wear as a tribute to her late relative.

Design

Rather than turn this 70`s genre ring into a contemporary design the plan was to make a more classic design. She liked this ring that I made some time ago.

The gemstones we had to work with were 3mm in diameter and the ring above used a 7mm gem in the middle and two 6mm gems on the sides. We would next see how that would change the look of the design.

My customer liked the design above but I was a little underwhelmed. I thought we could improve on this. We had some small diamonds from the old ring so I added them to the ring to give it a bit more width across the finger.

These changes were approved by the customer and during the quoting process it was decided in this case to not recycle the small amount of gold. We would be using the gems only.  You can read more about the process of recycling jewellery here.

Draft

With the design finalised and quote approved I moved onto making the draft. The draft allows me to confirm the design with the customer as she can try it on before I make the actual ring.

It also allows me to modify it to the exact finger size required thus avoiding resizing a brand new ring. You can read more about why you should avoid resizing a brand new ring here.

Deliver

The ring was made in 18ct Palladium white gold. The gemstones from the old ring are hydrothermally created Emeralds that have a low monetary value but to this woman are priceless for sentimental reasons.
