Red-browed Finch

Ravenshoe, August 2021.

Male and females are similar and both are easily identified by their red eyebrow, bill, rump and uppertail coverts. The female has a slightly narrower eyebrow than the male.

The top of their body is an olive colour with yellow patches on the side of the neck and their tale is black. Here you can see the red uppertail coverts.

The underpart of the bird is buff- grey. Immature birds do not have the red eyebrow and the bill is dark. In this photo the yellow patches on the side of the neck are very visible.

You usually see them in large flocks after they have bred. They like the wet and open areas so parklands with water is ideal.

They feed on seeds, small fruits and insects. They prefer to feed on the ground. They are a common bird.
