The male and female look similar with the distinctive bright citrus yellow underparts. Their chin is white and their head and upper parts mid grey.

The race of this bird found in North Queensland has a bright yellow rump whilst the race found in the southern states has an olive yellow rump. They are usually seen in pairs or small family groups.

As well as the white chin they have a very faint white eyebrow. They are a quite inquisitive bird so usually hang around darting between trees.

You often see them hanging from the side of a tree as shown above. They pounce down on insects, spiders and invertebrates usually on the ground. They are a common bird you will find in coastal mountain forests, woodlands, rainforests, mallee, parks and mulga.
