Red-capped Plover
These are a tiny little 140-160mm bird. Above is a male in breeding plumage during which it displays a bright reddish brown crown and nape.
The female is duller with indistinct black markings. Non breeding and the female’s upper parts are plain grey.
They feed on insects and crustaceans on open tidal areas such as sand and mudflats.
The birds are usually found in pairs or small groups. They run around the flats and if you disturb one they usually stop in place, fly away a short distance and then take to foot again.
